We are a recycling and environmental education centre in Arugam Bay.

Why?

Arugam Bay is a booming surfing destination on Sri Lanka's East coast. But more tourists also mean more plastic waste.

At WLAB we are trying our best to contribute to a cleaner Arugam Bay and prolong the life of plastic. We also believe not all plastic is bad. It is an awesome material and has great properties but we seriously need to reconsider our consumption of single use plastics and redesign the value chain. With our waste collection alone it is extremely difficult to break even since the value of the raw material waste is so low.

If you are in Arugam Bay try your best to avoid plastic bottled water and create a demand for refill options. Every inquiry with hotel owners makes a difference to better options.

Beach clean ups are hard work an we can only make them thanks to supporting organizations like Empower. Please visit their website if you want to support our clean ups.

You can also buy from our range of products made from waste plastic.

WLAB was cofounded by USAID and Lanka Upcycles. Since 2020 we do not receive any funding from USAID anymore and operate as a private sector business.
